To start of the bulk of the assets for my major project, I started off with blocking out my street scene, using blocks and some of the maya assets such as the human and car asset – I started to build my street, I found this quite challenging as I struggled to communicate the idea in my head to  the scene in Maya. I also found that I struggled a bit with the scaling of the buildings, they seems way too big and slender. I also found that they were all sitting quite symmetrical to each other, which wouldn’t be realistic in a real street, so – The first initial problems with my early block out consisted of:

  • Scaling Issues
  • Size variation issues

Development

Moving on from these, I started to model some buildings individually – I seen some YouTube tutorials which I decided to follow as, I was confident in creating exterior building as I was only ever used to creating interior scenes. Creating these building were quite challenging, I wanted to avoid creating any Ngons and-with complex building such as these – it can be easy to miss out on.

Block out with updated buildings

Now that I had a bit more detail in my buildings, I created my second Block out for my exterior scene. I also added in a street  and some street poles to help give me some idea of how my scene Is starting to come together. After this block out, I was finally seeing a street resemblance. I based this block out a lot of my reference images and concept sketches.

Issues I found:

  • Scaling problems
  • Buildings still too linear

Modelling the blockout opened my eyes at the importance of scaling, I created the street however it is far too big – I recreated my street and experimented with the scaling until I got it right.

I also over complicated things with my street, trying to create the road in a certain shape as oppose to creating one giant plane or individual planes. My first attempt at crating my road created issues instantly as I wanted the street to bed which meant Ngons started to form. This started to cause some issue whenever I tried to Uv and texture, the road will be a big factor in my exterior scene so it was important that the road was created good and properly. I fixed this by separating everything out a bit more, so Firstly I create individual plane for the road and set them underneath. Secondly, I detached the carb and the footpath and made them separate meshes, as just like the road – Ngons began to form which cause a lot of issues and finally I UV’s everything separately so I could get the most out of my assets.

Block out development – Buildings

I was still not overly happy with any development of my block outs, so I decided to model a few more buildings – different size, different width and shape. This variation of buildings should hopefully give me a better idea of how my exterior scene will start to come together and my current scene was far too street and linear for me to believe.

I gathered up some more reference images of different buildings, I added the all together and started to note down anything that made it really stand out –

Final Block out

I created some more building and updated my street, so Henry advised me to create one final block out in Maya to put everything together. i duplicated some buildings and rotated some slightly so I avoided having such a linear street.
