Draft 01

For the first draft of my own poster that I did on procreate, I found some amazing apocalyptic images on google which I found very fitting, as I am taking a rendered screenshot of my major project scene in Unreal Engine I cant use my own scene yet as it is not complete. I really liked how this image was laid out as it is a similar setting to how I want my own scene to look like. Additionally, from reviewing this poster I really loved the lighting shining through the buildings, I feel it really made the world more realistic instead of having just dark blue or green skies like some of the other posters I looked at previously. This will help me when I lay out my scene in Unreal for my rendered screenshot, allowing me to plan my grid and how I want everything to be placed within the scene such as the cars and street lamps and some trees.

I decided to go for the font ‘Coachin’ as I really liked the sharpness of it, i wanted to make the font white as it stood out more as opposed to black that almost faded into the background. I really like how this draft tuned out, however I think its a bit overwhelming on the eyes and want to ensure when Im making my own poster to leave a space for the title.

Naming my Project

One of my first tasks were to try and come up with a name for my project that would fit well with my post apocalyptic theme, I began to research different approaches to the word ‘Apocalypse’. I noted down some of the words that I liked the most and what I thought could be the best potential fit for my project, such as: Annihilation, Catastrophe and Destruction. However, I didn’t like how any of these sounded and how they looked in my poster, as the narrative of my project is an empty, inhabited world – I wanted a name that could reflect this. I began to research different ways that the word ‘Empty’ can be phrased, such as: Uninhabited, abandoned and desolate.

I decided to look further into the word ‘Desolate’ and really loved the official description of ‘Desolation’ in the dictionary, as it stated that Desolation was ‘a state of complete emptiness or destruction’. I felt it was super fitting for my project and I really loved how it looked on the poster, so I finally decided to stay with the title of Desolation for my final name.

Feedback

I received some feedback for my first draft of my Poster, which stated about the the pure white colour of my font being too high contrast. Additionally it was stated that I should try experimenting further with different typefaces that would be better suited for an apocalyptic themed project, as my current font is a bit too conservative and traditional. After reflection, I agreed with this as the font wasn’t appropriate for the context of my project, taking that factor into account – I began researching some different fonts that would be suited for my poster.

Typeface

I researched some different typeface that would be commonly associated with an apocalyptic theme and added them into a document on procreate to review. I really loved how these different typefaces looked and it really emphasised the overall theme of my project, it was a lot more fitting as opposed to my last font which was a lot too clean. I will try adding these font to y poster to experiment and evaluate which will be the best fit overall.

Poster with new typeface

overall, i’m a lot happier with how these posters look with the new fonts, I am currently feeling drawn to the first new font as I feel it looks a lot better, I also decided to tone down the colour of the font to a darker, more grey tone. However I’m still going to experiment further with fonts and the colour as my poster doesn’t feel ready yet, I will re-evaluate with more feedback.
