Belfast – The Car Free Campus

Belfast – The Car Free Campus

As we kick off Semester 2, we’re excited to remind students, staff and university stakeholders about the many sustainable transport options available to reach our ‘Car Free’ Belfast Campus.  Whether you’re walking, cycling, or taking public transport, getting to campus is easy and eco-friendly!

Active Travel: Walk or Cycle to Campus

One of the best ways to reach Belfast Campus is on foot or by bike.  Not only does this promote a healthier lifestyle, but it’s also a more sustainable option. If you’re cycling, you’ll find two dedicated Cycle Hubs at the campus:

  • Frederick Street Hub: Located next to the car park entrance.
  • Block BA Hub: Accessible at Curtis St entrance.

These hubs are equipped with secure locker storage and changing facilities, and are free to use. Additionally, the Frederick St hub boasts a drying cupboard and a bike repair station for those rainy days or minor bike issues.

To access the Cycle Hubs, just register via carparks@ulster.ac.uk.

For more information on cycling to campus and the services available at the hubs, check out our Cycle Hubs page Click Here.

And if you prefer to use Belfast Bikes, you’re in luck! A station is conveniently located near the campus at Cathedral Gardens, offering connections to over 50 stations across the city.  You can explore more at Belfast Bikes. Click Here

Public Transport: Easy, Reliable Connections

Belfast Campus is well-served by rail, bus, and coach services, making it simple to commute from anywhere in the city. We recommend using Translink’s Journey Planner app to check timetables and plan your next trip.

By Train:

  • York Street Station: Just a 12-minute walk from campus! And don’t forget, rail ticket holders can enjoy free onward travel on any passing Metro bus service.
  • Lanyon Station: A lovely 20-minute stroll along the riverside path.
  • Grand Central Station: An 18-minute walk from campus, or you can hop on a U1 or U2 bus to connect directly to campus.

By Bus:

Starting January 27, 2025, the U1 & U2 bus services will make commuting from South Belfast, the Belfast Campus, and Jordanstown easier than ever.

Coming by Car?

The Belfast Campus is designated as ‘car free,’ with limited parking available exclusively for blue badge holders and those with specific needs. We encourage everyone to explore alternative, more sustainable ways to travel to campus.
