Green Week at Ulster University Students Union

Towards a Sustainable Campus

Ulster University Student Union (UUSU) Green Week is an inspiring initiative designed to engage students and staff in meaningful activities that promote sustainability and environmental awareness. The week is packed with events that provide practical insights and encourage eco-friendly practices.

Sustainability Workshops offer interactive sessions covering essential tips on waste reduction, sustainable shopping, and greener living. From engaging DIY projects to expert-led discussions, participants gain valuable skills while deepening their understanding of conservation.

The Campus Spinathon brings the community together in a unique way, as students and staff collectively aim to cycle 49km—a symbolic effort to highlight the target of reducing energy-related emissions by 49% in Northern Ireland by 2032.

Recycling and Upcycling Initiatives are another highlight of the week. Through creative projects, recycling challenges, and donation drives, attendees are encouraged to rethink consumption and find innovative ways to repurpose everyday items, reducing overall waste.

I had the opportunity to attend the Love the Oceans Talk, organised by the Belfast Sustainability Society, Roise McQuaid which shed light on the vital work being done by the non-profit marine conservation organization. Based in Jangamo Bay, Mozambique, Love the Oceans focuses on protecting diverse marine life, including sharks, rays, and humpback whales, through research, education, and diving. Their ultimate goal is to establish a Marine Protected Area to safeguard biodiversity and endangered species, ensuring a sustainable future for the region.
