Last week, I was placed in a different group for our class’ ‘create a world’ challenge, so I am now working in a group with the world theme of ‘moth cult’ which developed from initially being ‘forest society’, therefore this week, myself and two other team members were tasked with developing this new world with some new team members that have just joined from other projects.
My new team members are; Stork McDowell, Milo Knopik, William Dolan, Caity Kerr and Alex Johnston. The general idea of the world is that, after a radiation leak, all of the worlds bugs became larger, possibly more so than humans, and have established a hierarchy over modern society, led by a giant moth.
For our character concepts, we discussed the possibility of different insect characters having different roles within the cult, for example, we could have pond skaters as a mode of water transport. The character that I decided to design was a butterfly, who would act as the cult’s PR representative and recruit new humans into the cult.
Pictured below are the different stages of my character design process. I loved how they turned out in terms of shape construction and the art style, however, the term cult suggests that the creatures are more sinister than what I may have depicted here, so although I matched the colour palette well and executed a nice design, if I were to do this again, I would try to make the butterfly character less anthropomorphic vis-à-vis the round, cute face and eyes, and possibly the clothing too.
