For our second assignment in this module, we are tasked with designing, modelling and sculpting a ‘cute (organic) 3D character’. At first I was concerned it would be difficult to come up with a design that would be interesting and have some ‘personality’ to it, given the parameters of no hard surfaces and no individual hairs or fur that wasn’t 3D sculpted, but fortunately, when starting out with some basic shapes, I came up with my first cute character idea; Barnaby the Penguin.
The main reason that I think Barnaby has great potential is the fact that I’ve given him a ‘backstory’; he is learning to swim. Because penguins are infamously good swimmers, I thought this concept would be ironic and humorous.
We were also introduced to a new modelling software called Blender, which I think will be useful for creating more interesting textures on meshes. In class I made this model of an alien head, which covered parenting meshes, using sculpting tools and joining meshes;
