Week 9: Animatics

Before beginning our final animation, our lecturers instructed us to make an animatic of our scenes. This acts as a guideline for the timing and spacing of each animated shot as well as a reference for the animator’s progress from storyboard to moving images.

I used greyscale and tried to avoid intricate detailing such as drawing discernable faces or backdrops because this is just a rough plan. Admittedly, I found this difficult as I consider myself to be somewhat of a perfectionist, but as this was my first time, I was open to trying this as a new technique. I used the app Procreate for the animation at 12fps and then used the app CapCut to add some keyframes to the video, creating the impression of a moving camera.

For the background music, I used an instrumental cover of the song ‘I Will Always Think of You’, from the animated Netflix series ‘BoJack Horseman’. I quickly found that animating to music was useful as it gave me a better idea of how my animation would progress, in terms of what actions would happen and when.
