For our 3D digital literacy project, we were asked to create a model inspired by one of the prompts from this list;
- Windmill
- Cuckoo Clock
- Treasure chest & treasure
- Sword & shield
- Sci-Fi Helmet / Radio
- Old Well
- Magic Witch / Wizard Staff
From this list I have chosen to make a well. I started my research by creating a Pinterest board with some ideas for the aesthetic and features that I wanted my model to have;
The features that seemed to recur the most in my saved images were curved and twisted trees or flat, circular stones, which got me thinking about a zen garden themed design for my well, so I made some concept art for my idea;
For the main body of the well, I want to reflect a Japanese crackle-glazed tea bowl design, and for the surrounding landscape, a twisted tree trunk hanging over the well for a rope to use with a pail or bucket. I also hope to add some flat rocks surrounding the well and apply a sand-like texture to the base that ‘supports’ the model.
Here is a screen grab of my progress so far;
The main shapes still need some smoothing and extrusion, but I’m very pleased with the base design so far; especially since I thought I would struggle creating the tree shape I wanted, by I’ve found that drawing a curve shape then using a star-shaped sweep mesh was much easier to manipulate, rather than extruding a cylinder one segment at a time using multi-cut.
I’ll be adding the final tweaks to the model and then using photoshop to prepare my textures, and then possibly continuing with surface painter.
