Week 3: Tone & Value

This week, my team and I focused on using tone and value in our thumbnail sketches in order to create the impression of depth and to enhance their perspective. Pictured below are the 6 thumbnail sketches I drew using Procreate for our Space Olympics world. I think they turned out good, however it’s difficult to convey the tone in a way that doesn’t seem like there is a fog descending over the image; it looks more ominous than I intended.Other members of my team also created concept sketches for our world, for example, Manny Maguire, William Dolan and Mark Smith all contributed sketches of poses depicting motion and character design ideas;

Even though we added new members of the class into our teams this week, I think this was beneficial because we have gained so many talented artists, all of whom have their own creative ideas and styles– this way, we can all learn from each other’s techniques, for example, based on one of Mark’s sketches, I created a digital version of the Mercury Athlete’s character design;

I also experimented with (anti-gravity) gymnast poses in a short conceptual animation at 12fps;
