Making refinements
After deciding on one of my initial iterations to use going forward, I made a digital version on Illustrator a few weeks ago. After we had a group critique, I decided that the plain black lettering looked quite bland and decided to make a few changes.
I gave it a circle background and changed the letters to white. I think this looks a lot more interesting and unique.
This will be my finalised monogram:
I then went on to try this design in different colour ways. Although I was pretty certain that I would stick with the white on black design, I thought I’ll not truly know until I see it with colour.
The first way I added colour was by changing the colour of the lettering
The main colours I wanted to experiment with were green, purple, and red. This is because the connotations of these colours tie in well with my brand values, tone of voice and brand story/bio.
Green connotes nature (which I stated loving in my bio), and freshness. Since my tone of voice includes out of the box ideas, I thought the green could imply that my brand and my work is all fresh ideas and unique results.
PurpleĀ connotes creativity. Having creative ideas is something very important to me and my brand, so trying purple was a must for me.
Red connotes boldness, courage and determination. Being bold with my designs is part of my tone of voice, and something I definitely want to be associated with my brand.
However, I wasn’t too sure about these colours for lettering on the black circle, so I tried changing the background colour and keeping the white letters.
I actually really like the result of all of these. This exercise has mainly showed me that the letters of my monogram could be placed on almost any colour as long as the contrast is stark enough. I think, as long as I keep the shapes and layout the same, I could use multiple different circle colours in the future.
