Our project for week 8 is “Follow the Rhythm”. For this project we are to take some lyrics from a song we like and design them in a way that corresponds with the genre.
The song I have chosen to use is “can’t look back” by Machine Gun Kelly. The lyrics I will use are “my hesitation is the enemy”.
I chose this song and these lyrics because I really enjoy listening to it at the moment, and I can relate quite well to the lyrics. My wariness and hesitation to move forward with certain aspects in my life can hold me back, “my hesitation is the enemy”.
The genre of this song, and album, is pop/punk and, because of this, I looked to the Dadaists and Jamie Reid for inspiration, as well as some other punk posters for bands like Green Day etc.
In the “Tickets to my Downfall” album cover, Machine Gun Kelly actually makes multiple nods towards Jamie Reid’s Sex Pistol designs. With the iconic bubblegum pink and pieces of text that look as though they’ve been cut out of a magazine, the TTMD cover definitely synonymous with the punk style that Jamie Reid had established in the late 90s.
Something I will definitely include in my design is the classic bubblegum pink and neon yellow colour scheme. This is seen time and time again within Sex Pistols posters and album covers.
As well as this, the bubblegum pink was used in the Machine Gun Kelly album that I have taken the lyrics from. I love how these colours look together, almost complimentary. They make the poster look lively and manic, just like the music it goes alongside.
I really liked this Green Day poster because of the spray paint effect on the typography. I also liked the use of red in this poster and I might also try to include it within mine.
The part of this poster that caught my eye was the title. I really like how the two words written on top of eachother looks, especially with the black background on “DISTORTION”. I might try to do something similar in my design, also using two different fonts and colours, however, it will probably be the same word twice rather than two different words.
