S2 WEEK 7
This week Henry introduced us to Blender, Blender is a 3D creation suite and the reason we’re being shown this is because our next assignment is an Intro to Organic Modelling.
This Organic Modelling assignment requires us to model/sculpt, texture and present via Sketchfab, a cute character in order to play homage to a Pictoplasma competition brief. We are given no limits on what character we can create, but must take into consideration their context, accessories, pose and expression. This assignment is due for the 12th of May.
Henry started us off easy with Blender, the class exercise being to model an apple, and the homework to sculpt a bell pepper and a pear.
We were shown how to navigate the program, how to place reference images onto the workspace and use the different axis’ to sculpt our fruit. I did run into issues with Blender though, as it looked like a setting wasn’t working on my tablet when in fact it was, this caused me to waste some time before I could finally get around to modelling. It’s quite simple when you get used to it, although I did get a little confused when it came to the whole dyntopo thing and what it exactly did in the beginning. I managed to do a pretty decent first attempt at this simple apple though, all things considered!
I started to come up with concepts for my cute character this week.
I thought the best course of action would be to make an initial spider diagram of the things I’d be interested in doing. I considered doing fanart for a while – since I really like Pokemon I briefly thought about modelling one of my favourites such as Buizel or Shinx. I also considered modelling an original character.
I thought about objects, plants or simple animals. The few that stuck with me the most is a mushroom person, an oc of mine called Sardine, a cat in a wizards hat with a wand, or a dinosaur of some kind.
I also compiled a bunch of images that will inspire how I go around exploring my ideas and concepts. From a range of different artists and mediums. I will explore some concepts I’m interested in shortly and the inspiration and research I’ve garthered from these images will help me no doubt create a very good cute character.
