WEEK 11
Over the duration of this week we were allotted time for one-to-one feedback from our lecturers. Everyone in the class were given a time to talk with either Alec, Sarah, Aodhan or Patricia.
For my one on one feedback I was with Patricia. I sent her my animation work I’d gotten done so far and she took a moment to look at it. She gave me very helpful advice and critque. We talked about what I was happy and unhappy with in my animation and we focused on the arcs of the actions of the characters and in the arms of Hazel, since I wasn’t totally satisfied with what I’d done there. I then brought up the fact that the scene where Hazel lifts Booyah up will be difficult to animate so she helped me by looking through possible references with me, sending me the link to a few videos she thought might be helpful. I was really grateful for her critique and advice as it made me aware of my shortcomings and she gave me advice on how to improve my work in the future!
I lined my roughs in my first scene this week. I’m not a particularly big fan of lining my work, and prefer much better to leave my work rough or clean up the original roughs – But for this project I felt that lining it would be the better course of action. I used the pencil brush tool in Krita for my lines since I didn’t want too harsh a line and wanted some variation in tone and brush size.
I also coloured this scene! I found the colouring very time consuming since I needed to colour so many different things on so many different layers, but despite the fact it took a tedious amount of time I was very pleased with the outcome — I was worried I wouldn’t be happy with it because I wasn’t the biggest fan of my lineart but adding the colour really helped take my mind away from that and I think it looks very good! I really enjoy the overlay we use for each different area of the world, the colours in my overlay are very warm so it’s very nice to look at.
This week I also managed to get the lines done for my second scene as well, I intend to retime this a little possibly but overall I’m very happy with how this scene came out so far, I think it shows a lot of personality.
For lecture content this week Sarah went over animating 2D effects and the amount of time each effect should take and how many frames it would take for the action to complete or loop again without it looking too fake. We went over things like rain, snow, water and fire. It was very helpful to me who didn’t really know where to start when it came to animating effects and now I know I have the basic knowledge of how to animate certain effects, and that lecture video and slides to go back to should I ever need to look at it again.
