WEEK 4
The lecture this week focused on colour. How it’s used, what it can convey, and what moods it creates.
One of the tasks we were asked to do was find the colours in a scene of a movie/show we liked, and in these think about how they could’ve used colour scripts in these scenes during the storyboards to convey the specific mood they wanted to create.
I looked at the colours in shots from Coco, Lilo and Stitch, Howl’s Moving Castle and Oliver and Company. The one’s that stand out the most to me are the screencap from Coco and Lilo and Stitch, as there are primary lighting and colours in the scenes that convey very specific moods, while the screencap from Howl’s Moving Castle and Oliver and Company don’t convey as strong a mood through the use of colour in these scenes.
The use of yellows and oranges in the shot from Coco conveys warmth, during the colour script stage I believe these we’re highlighted as very emotional, but in a nice, safe way by the use of using the various warm colours. He’s communicating with someone he loves, and this no doubt meant a lot to him.
Greens tend to mean earthy colours, and stability, but instead it was probably shown in the colour script to convey something unnatural and as a warning in the shot from Lilo and Stitch.
We were also tasked with colouring one of our thumbnails we had created the last week, we were given the option to use analogous, monochromatic, complementary or triadic colours.
I decided to try to use triadic, and while I like the colours I used, I didn’t prefer it to be used for the world, as they seemed unnatural and too bright. If I could do this again I would probably prefer to use monochromatic or analogous.
The final task we were asked to do was to use colour to convey a specific mood in an image, same image, different moods. I decided to go opposite sides of the spectrum and convey fury in one of mine, and hopefulness in the second. I really like the way I created the sky in my fury attempt, as I think the lightening adds the feeling of anger, and the dark clouds are also associated with anger and bad moods. I also made it so that there was a fire started by the lightning in the tree line, and the reds carried throughout the image, reflected in the water and the embers flew in the wind. I think it very much conveys fury.
The hopeful one is far brighter, with flowers blooming on the incline and a bright blue sky and water. The bright colours convey the outlook! The main thing that conveys the mood of hopefulness in this image is the sun peeking over the horizon, as suns rising often convey new beginnings and instil hope!
The rest of the work I did throughout the week was concept work. I was moved into group 3 this week so had to deal with being thrown from a project I was getting comfortable with into something completely new. I didn’t have any complaints though, and quickly drew some character concepts and familiarised myself with the ones that already existed.
A sketch I did of the main character to familiarise myself with her.
It is thought the main character would have a robot companion, who we designed this week. His whole concept is that he’s a forgetful robot that was thrown away years prior, his software hasn’t been updated in years so he’s stuck with old software that has left him with the personality of a childs entertainment robot/best friend who talks/acts like they’re in the 90’s — so uses 90’s dialect and gives them cheesy life advice. We went through various concepts but narrowed it down quite quickly and I did a few colour concepts for them. I based 2 of them off 90’s tech like he was based off, like a Nintendo Gameboy and a Tamagotchi, and found myself liking the colour concept in which I gave him Gameboy colours the most — as it’s nostalgic and goes together well!
I also took some time to create some very basic prop designs for the main character, who has a hovering, futuristic skateboard. I wanted to create her a skateboard that fit her personality, and thought it would be cool to take inspiration from the solar cruiser Jim made in the movie Treasure Planet.
