WEEK 1
In Week 1 we were told how form and shape can make up a character, and we were shown how to find the shapes and forms in a range of different characters.
The task we were given was to take 3 characters we liked and find the different forms and shapes they make up. I chose to do Jessie from Pokémon, Toothless from How to Train Your Dragon, and Catra from She-ra and the Princesses of Power.
I had already initially given a short description of why I thought certain shapes had been used in Catras design, but if I can elaborate further, I think her design is perfect for her role in the show, which is the misunderstood antagonist. Her sharp and feline design gives her to some extent a threatening aura, but this is balanced by cute attributes too such as a tail and ears! So, she can be very nasty, but very nice too – Just like the cats we see in everyday life.
Toothless’ Main charm lies in the juxtaposition of his design, I personally believe. His sharp wings and streamlined shape compared to the round forms that make up his legs and ‘ears’. There’s also the appeal in toothless that his main design and behavioural inspirations were based on one of the artist’s cats! (This was revealed in the films commentary.) This means that his body movements and some attributes, such as his eyes and ears, are very similar to a cats, which appeals to pretty much everyone!
