I’ve found this entire semester to be a mixture of fun, frustrating, exciting, and extremely challenging. As someone with no previous experience using 3D software, I’ve approached every task with the mindset of making things functional before making them pretty. It’s been like learning to draw from scratch all over again and I haven’t gotten to enjoy learning the fundamentals in ages. I’ve found almost every project up to this point challenging to some degree, but this assignment threw me for several loops. Between bashing my head into a wall over UV unwrapping and fighting for my life with weight painting, I barely spent any time in my comfort zone at all. I’m glad that was the case, though, as now I understand so much more about the basics of modelling simple objects and how to navigate Blender and Substance painter. Getting to put all of the things I’d learned over the weeks to use on modelling a character was a really gratifying experience and, while there are definitely parts of my model that I’m unsatisfied with, I’m generally very pleased with my final result, as just a few months ago I wouldn’t have dreamed of making something like this. I’m excited to face more challenges and develop my skills going forward.
