Creating a 3D Letterform
This brief which was set by Ruth, instructed the creation of a freestanding 3D letterform, using any materials of our choice.
In response to this, I decided to approach the task using wire, masking tape, yarn and a boatload of hot glue.
I began by creating each 2D side of the letterform (twice each) using a handful of thin wire sticks grouped together to reinforce the strength of the letterform. Then, I wrapped each handful of wire tightly and completely in masking tape, followed by yarn, wrapped compactly to prevent any of the tape showing through. Next, I used a hot glue gun to attach the sides creating two 2D letterforms. Once all sides were completed and connected , I repeated the process for the lengths of wire which were to connect both 2D letterforms to produce the final 3D product.
I would emphasise that I did enjoy this project, although somewhat challenging to create, I believe that by following the design that I came up with the final product is visually interesting. To really finish of my letterform I will make some final touches, such as, removing any excess glue which is visible.
