Week 7 – Intro to Sculpting
We had two in-class workshops in the first week which is just an introduction to sculpting in Blender.
The first task just to mess around with the different tools and create random shapes. I found it tricky to work with and didn’t like the feeling of it at all.

The second task was to sculpt a head and I also found this super hard. Sculpting from just a cylinder was weird as I had to just kind of brute force the form (even if I had a reference!). Adding details was also difficult, I tried to go for a semi realistic style and struggled trying to sculpt the mouth. I was using grab, smooth and draw to mostly sculpt this.

Week 10 – Adding Detail and Baking Normal Maps
This week’s class workshop was to sculpt extra details to an elephant, bake the normal map and texture it in 3D Substance Painter. I sculpted a couple scars, trunk detail and wrinkles onto the elephant using the multiresolution modifier and then baked the normal map in Blender which was something new. I was unfamiliar with using multires to bake the normals but Mike helped me sort any issues I had. I then textured it with different layered asset materials (there wasn’t an elephant skin tecture so I had to compromise) and painted blood onto the surface.

After all that, all the texture maps are exported back to Blender and I made a little setup and messed around in the shader editor for the render.

Week 11 – Posing the Character and Uploading to Sketchfab
This week’s workshop was pretty simple! We learnt about armatures and posing which was pretty fun to work with.
