Week 7 – Animation Fundamentals

This week we learnt about timing, spacing and the 12 fundamentals of animation.

For homework we were to animate three bouncing balls and explore timing and spacing to convey different types of weight to the ball. There were reference YouTube videos provided on the Blackboard which I used.

I did a practice animation in class first and then moved on to animate a bowling ball. To show the heavy weight of it, I spaced the initial drop to the bounce up pretty far apart and gave it little bounces afterwards without much stretching/squashing because it’s a hard, solid object. Less frames were also used for this because of its weight (it’s a quick drop)!

The second ball I did was a bouncy ball which required more frames and less spacing because it’s light. The bounces are also more frequent and varying in height. Bouncy balls are kind of rubbery so I added more squash and stretch to it as well.

For the final ball, I animated a football which in my mind is like an in-between for the bouncy ball and bowling ball. Basically, I mixed what I did for the other two balls and followed my practice attempt pretty closely except with less elasticity because it looked pretty similar to a football bounce.

This week was pretty insightful! I would definitely like to explore the 12 animation fundamentals a bit more perhaps in my free time.

World Design Progress

This week we also finalized groups for our animation assignment and I decided to stayed in Biohazard (group 2) because I still liked the concept we were working on. We discussed character personalities and adding more side characters, props, the plot, what scenes we could add and developed the general world viewpoints, conflict, culture, hierarchy etc.

There’s also a lot more people in our group now so we’re discussing about splitting the narrative in two (heroes’ view and villains’ view) so that is still in the works.
