Week 5: Character Design

This week’s topic was Character Design, I took to designing a background character/ possible side character that acts as an obstacle in the story for Group 5. Ephah is the guardian and protector of a large mass of  forest (that possibly holds some relics or important objects the main character must acquire) and does not allow any humans/humanoids, constellations or even Gods into his forest. I had other ideas for a village that worships Ephah in the hopes he will allow them to hunt for game or use his trees, they’ve built statues and halls of worship for him, but he does not relent.

Character References:

I took my design inspirations from other characters, particularly those of higher social status like nobles or royalty (I had written down my main inspirations on page 3; Scar (The Lion King), Jafar (Aladdin), King Thranduil or Lord Elrond (The Lord of The Rings), Pai Mei (Kill Bill) and King Triton (The Little Mermaid).

The Designs:

This was the first of the colour studies of Ephah, while I’m still not completely pleased with the colour choice this was the best one out of the bunch. I think these are my favourite faces for all 3 creatures, especially the lion face as I wanted a regal, stern but not evil character.

These 2 pages were the first drafts of this design, while I really like the build and face of the first large drawing I felt as though he looked too much like an antagonist. Yet the 2 bottom front view lion faces I felt looked too soft and old. I really liked the inclusion of long goat fur on the back but ended up not keeping it in case it seemed too difficult to animate. Design 2 I enjoyed as well, but again felt as though he leant more on the evil side.

A few expression studies and a side profile of design 1.
