Week 2: Perspective and Composition

During week two we studied the techniques of using perspective and composition in the form of twelve thumbnail concept designs for our group project ‘design a world’. My group decided on a dystopian wasteland version of Earth, which I attempted to convey through the concept art;

I attempted multiple different perspective shots; high, low angles, close ups, triangular compositions and compositions that would lead the eye to the focal point (i.e. the dragon’s shadow, the orbs, the stalagmites and stalactites. Some have more tonal value and therefore more interest than others (particularly the bottom row) but I am pleased with the results nonetheless. Although, my attempt at 2 point perspective in the top row did not come out as complete as the others, I struggled with keeping the forms the same from both angles and I feel it looks stiff.

As a class we studied the various types of perspectives, and explored how objects may be placed in the frame to create a certain atmosphere  (the composition). I attempted a few 1 point perspectives, a 2 point perspective and framing techniques to make a pleasing and interesting composition.

We were also asked to look at perspectives in use in produced animation, 3 1 point and 3 2 point perspectives were what we had to study; I circled areas of interest where the perspective lines meet the still shot, and coloured different lines according to where they meet and line up with the land or character. I still struggle with pinpointing the areas in 2 point perspective but the videos provided were a great help in understanding how to see it correctly and find it in shots.
