Week three’s class tasked us with understanding and applying tones and values to our ‘design a world’ concept art. In the beginning of the class we explored the meaning of tone/value, and some students were mixed into new groups to begin working on a new idea, applying the week’s subject.
We studied examples of different techniques to create form through tone and value, ranging from using 10 different values, to 3, to 2 and exploring shading techniques such as cross-hatching.
For this exercise I was to draw up 6 tonal studies inspired by my group’s dystopian jungle styled world, and split the concepts to fit the techniques previously studied;
Though I am happy with all of them, the ‘cross hatching’ study is not as detailed or inspired as my others, and if I could I would revision it. Cross hatching is one of my favourite techniques but my study looks underdeveloped compared with the other fully rendered pieces.
As these were meant to be simple concepts, we were also tasked with further studying one of our thumbnail concepts;
I hoped that recreating the dark toned piece would create a sense of whimsy and otherworldliness, particularly with the limited light sources and intricate design of the tree roots. These were all drawn in Procreate with custom brushes, even though this program is good I feel I could have detailed these further on photoshop, and should have used that instead.
