The ‘Bouncing Ball’ animation exercise is a popular beginner experimental activity that employs a wide range of fundamental animation techniques, even in this simple frame by frame ball!
This was my first time completing this kind of exercise, and even though the linework is sketchy and appears to strobe at points (I assume because of inconsistent line weight) I am very pleased with my 3 first attempts. They were all done on 1 canvas, 23 frames, on Procreate on the iPad.
To get a cleaner result I will most likely go back and reline each one, in different canvases, as I believe this may have been one of the issues of the final; To keep it simple I should take Alec’s advise and use the tutorial of blocking out the shapes instead of ‘winging it’ and hand drawing everything, where there is the possibility of the ball sizes changing and lines strobing. An issue I faced as well was keeping a working loop with 3 different weighted balls, so I found I ran out of usable frames. I may also change the frame rate to fit a 12fps loop, instead of a 15 which I had used. On frames, I hadn’t been considering the fps when drawing each frame, which is something I plan to change when I redo this exercise.
I used a few video references and some frame tutorials;
