Genndry Tartakovsky – Research

The brief of this task was to sculpt a character and prop within the style of Genndry Tartakovsky, specifically the style of the film Hotel Transylvania.

Researching this style, I noticed distinct patterns within his work. These patterns usually consist of his constant use of over exaggerated shapes for his characters. We see this in a mixture of films such as the iconic shape of Dracula in Hotel Transylvania and the character of Samurai Jack.

Looking through the concept art for Hotel Transylvania, you can see the sheer amount of times a single character was drawn in different styles, outfits, expressions and mediums before the designs we all know and love where finalised.

Each and every character was given ample attention in the process of designing the characters. This shows the amount of work it takes to design a character to fit a certain style and puts into perspective the amount of time it takes to fully develop a character using 3D opposed to traditional 2D animation by taking into account the entire design process.
