Animation for Creative Industries – Art Style Guide

With this assignment we have to come up with an art style guide for our game which we are developing. Straight away, when we talked in our animation group we settled on wanting to do a ‘Saturday Morning’ Friendly Cartoon style. This style takes inspiration from media such as Spyro, Mario and Sonic for example. Once we decided on this we started looking for inspiration from different games that would help us decide our style.

Since our game is a first person shooter set in space, we tried to look for sci-fi shooter games which would fit our desired style.

After we settled on our inspiration from the styles, we divided the guide between us. Sarah took on the character design, Sean did the Prop design, and I did the Environment design.

When doing the environment design I decided to keep a slightly darker colour scheme, using darker greys for the walls and floors of the space station. This was mainly done as a compromise, as we had disagreements with the games design students on the style they wanted for the game. For this reason I kept a darker feel while still staying true to our desired style.

I set upon certain rules that should be kept with the environment. The colour scheme should be a selection of darker greys and some whites, but not verging too close to any extremes. Edges should not be too sharp and a bit rounded. This would help keep within our cartoon style. The rooms should have a sterile, clinical to help create the idea of isolation within the overrun space station.

Some of the rooms will have alien elements within them. For example, eggs, tentacles and different fauna. This would help us show the invasion of the aliens as well as allow us to add some colour to each of the individual rooms. These elements would fit the colour scheme of the aliens and not divert too far. This is to show consistency within the style.
