Week 4 – Sword

In week 4 we were introduced to UV mapping. It was a bit difficult to understand at the start, but I eventually started to get a grasp on it.

After completing the class workshop on UV mapping, our assignment for the week was to create a sword. I took reference from an elven blade from Lord of the Rings and added some of my own personal touches to it.

This model was very fun and interesting to do and I learnt a lot from it. The only problem I had when modelling was using solidifier Bézier curves. I used them to create the glowing spiral on my sword. The problem occurred at the UV maps, as applying this solidify and subdivision surface left it with over 1 million faces. To resolve this, I asked for some help from my friends in the year above. They taught me how to use the voxel remesh tool to decrease the number of faces while preserving the geometry.

I used Clip Studio Paint to texture the UVs to create the diffuse. This was quite simple and I used the previous textures from the class workshop and changed some of the hues to give it a different look. In blender. I used the diffuses multiple times to create materials as I wanted to change the metallic, roughness and emission settings of different parts of the sword.
