For our first lesson in animated narratives class, we began to look into the basic structuring of what makes a story. One of the main areas that was focused on was the hero’s journey diagram and we learned about this through having to do some exercises based on this. This exercise involved us being split into groups, and being given random objects to make a story from. Our group decided that we would make a story that was satire and comical. From this, we made a story about a talking rat who aspired to be a dentist after being hit by a boat. The story itself was rather stupid, however this was intended. Instead of something serious, we wanted to come up with a basic story that would be hilarious to the age range of young adults and those who have an alternative sense of humour.
Below is a diagram of our randomly generated story cube as well as our own hero’s journey diagram.
Prior to this activity, I wasn’t aware at all about what a Hero’s journey was, thus learning about this in class today has given me more of a structured way of thinking about how to create a narrative in my stories. I will take the knowledge earned today and put it towards future projects in order to make them more interesting from the viewers’ stand point.
