UV Mapping and texturing
This week, our lecture focused on UV mapping and how to use UV maps to apply textures the “old way” before we learned how to use substance painter.
Our in-class tasks were to texture a die, can of coke, and hammer. I found the dice and coke easy to understand and was able to complete them in class; however, I found the hammer extremely difficult, so I left it to focus on my sword.
I had two different sword models, and I was very happy with the model I went with in the end as it was simpler to texture and UV map. I really struggled to get my head around the wrapping and texturing process for the sword, but I rewatched the lecture, and the analogy of stickers finally clicked with me. In the end, I was satisfied with the final product, as I needed to struggle to succeed, and now I know how to do this semi confidently going forward.
Though it was disappointing to realise that my sword is too simple, I’m still happy that I was able to map and texture it in Krita, even though it was a really challenging task to draw the textures because I’m not used to drawing on a laptop; instead, I usually draw on an iPad.
