We got the opportunity to do warmups in class before moving onto our group tasks and to introduce us to the concept of warmups before sketching, as it is a great way to get rid of the intimidation of a blank page. I found these warm-ups really enjoyable and will incorporate them into my routine before I animate, especially the last two, which focused on form and shape as well as the characterization of those shapes.
Here are the warmups I did during class:
These warmups were to get rid of the fear of a blank canvas and it worked quite well when it came to the form exercises in the lecture.
Here are the form exercises:
The group task was also enjoyable and was a great way to break the ice between all of us, for that task we took pictures of certain phrases sort and could interpret them as we wanted.
For the first week of animation studio I was placed in a group with four other people; Amy Chen, Kain Mcelhinney, Charlie Thompson and Owen Parke. This isn’t my first time animating a group project so I’m feeling very optimistic and confident as we approach the task.
We came up with 88 ideas, here is what we came up with:
To pick our favourite 5, we all picked 3 each, then picked our favourite from there and were left with 5, which were cyberpunk, dream, mushroom, robots, and paranormal. We decided to combine all these together after Amy said they could all fit well together without making the narrative and environment feel bloated.
For our homework this week, we had to pick our three favourite characters and trace over them to find their construction lines, see what different shapes make up their form, and see how other animators use form to make interesting character designs.
I picked Remy from ‘Ratatouille’, Scooby doo and Tai lung from ‘Kung Fu Panda’.
