So this week we focused on topology, which refers to a 3D model’s edge distribution and structure. I wanted to know exactly why topology was important, so I researched it a little further.
So topology is important to the design of a 3D model because it affects how easily you can edit the model’s shape, how easy it is to edit the UVs, and how easy it is to unwrap the UVs of the model, as it is easy to do with good topology (quads and loops make good topology). It also affects how easy it is to rig and animate.
So our in-class task was to model a head and give it good topology, as Mike was doing while he checked our progress on our designs and gave feedback.
Here is the head I did in class while following along with Mikes in the class workshop:
I got feedback on my headless horseman design, which was pretty good! I just have to change the skull to a more fleshy head with eyes and a mouth and turn the strap into a satchel for a sword. So I shall remake my designs and reblock out my character.
I also did research on how to create hair in blender and came across this tutorial, which seems like a good and effective way to make hair and have it look similar to the hair in my design.
The tutorial explains how to use circle curves and path curves to make strands of hair and I’ve saved it to a playlist to come back to when the time comes to make the hair.
