In class this week, we were focusing on composition and perspective. For our in-class task, we took our favourite scenes from our favourite animated film, and I chose a scene from ‘The Prince of Egypt’ specifically the scene where Moses pleads with Ramses to release his slaves.
I thought it was interesting that both characters take up an equal amount of space in the frame, which shows they are evenly matched in terms of power.
We also covered different types of perspective and practiced them in class, particularly one-point and two-point perspectives since they are the most commonly used in the animation industry.
Here are some of the perspective practices I did in class.
I found the perspective exercises quite difficult however I feel I have a better grasp of how perspective is used and how it can be utilised.
Homework
For this week’s homework, we had to discuss certain scenes that could be found within our world and sketch them out as thumnails. We discussed briefly what we might find in our world. We all had different ideas of what to do, so we all did our own thing and are going to borrow aspects we like from each other and combine them in the final product.
My thumbnails are below. I tried to use three-point perspective and the golden ratio. I’m quite proud of them. I’ve had difficulties with perspective and environments in the past, as I tend to prefer animating and drawing characters. However, this was quite fun homework.
As part of my group project, Charlie and I created some preliminary character designs, and we’ve chosen to merge features of both in the future.
I was inspired by a 2016 YouTube short called “Butter lover.”
