‘Form and shape’ is one of the many fundamentals of visual design. ‘Form’ refers to an object in a three-dimensional space, giving it depth and volume, whereas ‘shape’ refers to the outline of the two-dimensional geometry. ‘Form and Shape’ is integral to character design as visual elements help you to convey a character’s personality, Identity, and many more things that contribute to the role they play within their narrative.

For my first character, I decided to study ‘Pochita’ from Chainsaw man.

What I found was that Pochita consisted of very soft, and rounded shapes, further emphasising the ‘cuteness’ that his character design possesses. There is a contradiction in pochita’s design as there is a chainsaw sprouting from his snout. Yet, as the viewer, we are able to still see him as ‘cute’ despite knowing how dangerous a chainsaw can be. This is because the design of the chainsaw is simplified, yet recognisable, fitting the softness of his design.

For my second study, I did ‘Mr.Fox’ from Fantastic Mr. Fox.

Compared the the former study, Mr. Fox has a more complicated and human feel, form and proportion wise. The realism could be so that he has a more grounded feeling to him, making him more relatable to the viewer. This all happens despite him being a Fox, despite foxes being four-legged mammals. You can tell by the shape and form that Mr. Fox is human like, yet still holding his animalistic features such as ears, snout, and tail.

For my last study, I did ‘Jake’ from Adventure Time.

Just like Pochita’s, Jake’s form is simple and rounded, giving him a whimsical and unhuman feeling. In spite of this, Jake’s still able to be seen as a Dog. This can be attributed to the fact that he holds simplified features of a dog.
