Tone and Value is how dark and light a colour or shade is. It is an integral part of art as your value can communicate depth and your tone can convey an atmosphere and mood.
Last week my thumbnail sketches also utilised Tone and Value as seen below.
The drawing below is the piece I worked on in class, and at home. I dislike this drawing a lot, as it does not show what I’m trying to accomplish. The goal of the sketch was to show an empty, dim, dystopia. This doesn’t come across well because of the tone and value. The artwork has bright, illuminated walls with poorly contrasted shade and shadow. I do think it has potential, however, if I were to redo this drawing I would up the contrast and add more focal points to make it less boring.
I also created a mood board to try and fit the vibe I wanted from the world as a whole. The main thing I wanted to show was a smoggy, dimly lit environment that is poorly looked after. That is reflected in my mood board with cold tones and the blocky buildings.
