Tone and Value Scenes:
Part 1:
For my first 6 initial thumbnail scenes I wanted to make sure I had at least one strong light source to allow for me to try and apply more dynamic tones to each scene, in the beginning it started of with simple light sources such as light coming from the end of an alley way or the moonlight, but as I progressed I wanted to try and make sure the light came from more unique sources to provide a more dramatic looking scene.
A wanted my scenes to try and fit the more noir, gangster aesthetic, meaning that a lot of them will be situated either in discrete locations at night where the gangsters less legal practices can happen without the worry of being spotted by unwelcome passerby.
A lot of my inspiration for the alleyways came from some of Hong Kong’s architecture with many of them being very claustrophobic in appearance and being filled with pipes, closed shutters, doors, cut offs into different directions and debris scatted everywhere. as for the other scenes I mainly just searched for run-down areas or objects and built a scene around them, for example the chair thumbnail was just me referencing an old chair and putting a large bright light above it
Part 2:
For the second part of the homework I decided on the 6th thumbnail sketch due to the fact that I felt it had an more interesting 2 point perspective compared to most of the other sketches, in addition to that it also had to unique light sources allowing for a more dynamic looking scene overall.
For this scene I was mostly inspired by old, run-down and forgotten american buildings and the way they were laid out in comparison to some of the bigger cities you’d normally see in America, personally I felt that if mobsters were doing shady deals, they would want to be doing them in places where nobody would be living
