In week 4 of Digital Literacy I spent some more time on Maya, to try and get more practice on UV unwrapping. Alec, our lecturer posted up a quick demo on placing textures on a dice using the UV editor. I found this demo informative and easy enough to understand.
After this I got a reference image of a “Tie Interceptor” from the movie ‘Star Wars’. Using this reference image I went on Maya and tried to model it, making it look accurate and as close to the image as possible. I spent quite some time working out the shapes to use, resizing them, moving them and rotating them to make up the base shape of the tie interceptor. I spent well over an hour modeling the asset and trying to make it look accurate. I then used the UV editor to unwrap it. I took the UV screenshot and brought it into Photoshop. We were tasked with just using basic colour textures for this so I tried to use the basic black and greys that make up the colour of the asset. I am happy overall with the model although I do feel there is definitely room for improvement in areas. I hope as I use this software more throughout the semester that I can become more confidant in the use of Maya.
Also in week 4 we all got the opportunity to use Adobe Substance 3D painter for the first time. Mike, our lecturer created a War hammer model for the class on Maya. I exported this model to Substance 3D painter to start working on it. Mike posted tutorials on how to use Substance 3D painter on blackboard and I went through this tutorial while using substance painter. I found the tutorials really helpful and easy to understand. Using the tutorials I was able to texture the War hammer the way I wanted and I found it interesting and fun to use. I went through the tutorial a couple of times to get more of an understanding on the software. I really enjoyed using substance painter and feel like I have gained a quick understanding on the basics of it. With more use of substance painter for my assignment coming up, I hope to develop on my skills using this software and on Maya.
