The final idea we chose as a group was the Noir Sugar prohibition world. This world would be set in the 40s/50s time period where sugar would be illegal. We joined a virtual call and discussed the world environment, the theme, the mood, characters and the story line. We would then need to create thumbnail sketches based on our world. These would show the environments, characters and would help set the tone for the world and hopefully show how dark and mysterious it will be. When doing the thumbnail sketches, It is important to take perspective and composition into consideration. In order to gain more understanding and get a little practice, I chose 3 background scenes from cartoon animations and traced over those scenes showing the one or two point perspective used.
It was then time to start my thumbnail sketches. I would be doing the sketches in a grey scale tonal colour, which worked perfectly in showing the noir style that our world is set in.
For my 12 thumbnail sketches I had researched images from the alcohol prohibition and images of 1940s/50s noir films. These helped inspire me when creating my thumbnails. I was able to research images of buildings and skylines from the 40s and use them when creating the environments within our world. I want the thumbnails to show how dark and gritty the sugar prohibition world will be for our characters and the grey scale colour palette used for my thumbnails was perfect for showing that.
Below is some of the images I used as inspiration for my thumbnail studies. I searched up images of harbors, to get a reference for the crane. I also researched old 1940s/50s cars to get help with visualising the type and style of car that would be present in this timeline. I looked up about the alcohol Prohibition to get images of barrels, particular the one where men are spilling the alcohol down the drains. This gave me inspiration the design the sugar spilling into the sea thumbnail.
