IXD102 – Pocket Profile: Sara Soueidan

Sara Soueidan is a Lebanese freelance UI/UX designer, trainer, author and speaker from Lebanon. She works with companies across the globe, building inclusive web interfaces & experiences with a strong focus on accessibility, progressive enhancement and performance. She runs a series of full-day workshops, where she trains teams of designers and developers about front-end developing including semantic markup, CSS and SVG. She is known throughout the design world for her in-depth and insightful technical articles that she posts on her own blog.

Soueidan’s first introduction to the web and coding, and the language of HTML, was at the age of thirteen, when she began taking a course at school. As soon as she saw HTML, she felt it was familiar to her. She immediately began learning more about it, reading up on books on coding and learning through different websites. A year after finishing college, she was speaking to one of her friends who was a designer and developer, and she really got into the idea of pursuing that as a career. She started learning about new CSS properties and started creating demos on CodePen, and has been doing so ever since.

Her favourite feature, when writing CSS, is the ability to scope variables and components. She created her own pattern library to speed up prototyping for her work, where scoping CSS variables really came into shine for her. When creating each pattern, she modifies the same properties whenever she needs to use them, such as the font, colours, shadows and spacing. It saves time for her to create variables for these properties of code, and to define them in the root of the document. Using this method, she is able to customise the themes and components by changing the property values of each rule set, instead of having to switch between multiple ones.
