This week, we had to create a few different character designs that would fit into our developing worlds.
I was switched into group 8, which was developing a world where a scientist accidentally brings plants to life and shrinks himself down to explore the new world that was in his own garden.
One of the main species in this world was Faeries that were based on different types of flowers, which was the basis for my own designs.
Bird of Paradise
The Bird of Paradise is a unique tropical flower that symbolises freedom. This Fae would be very sporty and outspoken, and would be able to use their petals as wings. I personally imagined that not all Faeries had to have wings, and that the choice could be made depending on the type of flower used or the type of character archetype that will be used.
When creating this character, I was inspired by the personality of Rainbow Dash from ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’.
Himalayan Poppy
The Himalayan Poppy is a difficult flower to grow, as it only flourishes in very specific conditions. This Fae can’t handle extreme weather and temperature well, and would live a simple life admiring nature while also being wary of it. This flower symbolises emotion, which would convey how this Fae can get lost in their own head as they yearn for a more exciting life than the one they live.
When creating this character, I was inspired by the personality of Fluttershy from ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’, and visually by Silvermist from the ‘Disney Fairies’ franchise.
Southern Magnolia
The Southern Magnolia symbolises purity and attracts a lot of bees due to it’s pollen. This Fae would be very sweet and have a positive outlook on life, enjoying life to the fullest in the time they have. Magnolias are known for not living as long as other flowers, which gives a bittersweet view to this Fae’s fated existence.
Secret Lust Coneflower
The Secret Lust is a type of Coneflower with a unique tuft of petals accumulated at the top. This inspired me to turn the Fae’s hair into an afro, which could represent this flower’s cone shape. This flower symbolises strength and maturity, which led me to create a character who could be considered a leader or mother figure to others around them.
When creating this character, I was partially inspired by the personality of Princess Celestia from ‘My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic’.
