Genndy Tartakovsky is a Soviet-born American writer, animator, producer and director. He is well known as being the creator of animated tv shows on Cartoon Network such as, Dextor’s Laboratory, Samurai Jack and Star Wars; Clone Wars. Tartakovsky is also best known for directing the first 3 Hotel Transylvania films and writing the fourth film, for Sony Pictures Animation. Furthermore, he was also a crew member of Powerpuff Girls. Genndy has a very unique animation style, especially with Hotel Transylvania as it blends horror elements with exaggerated, kid friendly styles.
The animation in Hotel Transylvania is created with 3D computer generated animation, using an exaggerated cartoon style which references the works of Chuck Jones who did Looney Tunes, or animator Tex Avery. The animation team created interesting shapes and postures for the characters, often with accentuated poses. They used fast movement and extreme exaggeration, combined with more controlled movements to create a dramatic contrast. Another reference to old school cartoons, is that the animators applied techniques such as squash and stretch, to replicate the visuals of those traditional cartoons.
I personally really enjoy the Hotel Transylvania art and animation style, I also appreciate the themes and horror elements within the movie series which you dont see as much in kids movies. I genuienly find these movies funny due to the exaggerated style and characters. I had a look at original concept art for the series and I am also a huge fan of the way they were originally designed, and I read that they changed it to fit the organic nature, exaggeration and energy of the movies animation.
