Summary:

We had an informative lecture on understanding, simplifying and implementing colour theory (specifically tone and value) into our work.

TASK 1: Warm-Up Tonal Study

TASK 2: Explore Lines

TASK 3: Film Scene Study

TASK 4: Tonal Scene Study (3 Examples)

I have taken my thumbnails from last week and expanded upon them.

Above is perhaps my favourite setting drawing. I wanted to really utilise the lighting the scene to create interesting contrasts and visuals – even though it’s all monochromatic/achromatic. The glowing eyes of the figure are literally just a plain grey beam emanating from white eyes and yet they carry such intensity and even horror.

I wanted the above scene to be the most expressionistic. I wanted to see how much of the form I could abstract before I started to lose the shape of the ship and storm surrounding it. I think I could have put more detail into the body of the ship – but overall it was a very fun experiment.

Above is a picture where I wanted to keep the figures very simple and very stylised. No exaggerated textures, just plain and simple. I think it still gets across the idea that this figure is trapped in a cave and stuck hiding from this monster with doors for eyes.

Homework:

EXAMPLE 1:

I wanted to push the horror of these images like in the one above – a strange door-headed Titan lumbers in the background as a silhouetted figure lays back in the foreground. It makes us wonder the relationship between the two.

EXAMPLE 2:

Keeping with the horror theme above, here’s a large door monolith based off of the monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey.

EXAMPLE 3:

This above piece is another instance of a large monolithic figure in this world with a door located at its base and a mass of black energy swirling around it against an electric sky.

EXAMPLE 4:

The above image had no inspiration or reference and was simply me playing about and having fun.
