Ulster University was awarded ‘University of the Year 2024’, by Times Higher Education.
Ulster University was hailed as a “force for good in fostering peace, prosperity and cohesion” and took the top spot in recognition of its role as an anchor institution in a region that has undergone rapid change in the quarter-century since the signing of the Good Friday Agreement in 1998.
The award also honoured the completion of Ulster’s £364 million Belfast campus, creating a vital connection to a historically underserved community, backed up with a schools’ programme designed to widen participation in higher education.

Ulster University has an outstanding reputation for teaching and research; this can be seen in the annual National Student Satisfaction (NSS) survey results and our perfomance in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF2021). Academic excellence permeates every aspect of our endeavours. Modern Languages at Ulster
We have an excellent Modern Languages and Linguistics research unit at Ulster, engaged in world-leading research in linguistics and the study of Irish, including CALL, language acquisition and language identity, syntax and pragmatics, discourse, and Irish language and literature (both Early and Modern).

In the most recent national research evaluation exercise REF2021, 79% of our research was judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. 100% of the impact case studies we submitted were judged as having outstanding or very considerable impacts in terms of their reach and significance. One of these case studies was focused entirely on CALL. Our research environment was judged to be conducive to producing research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality and enabling outstanding impact, in terms of its vitality and sustainability.
Irish is the main modern language that is taught at Ulster, on both its Derry and Belfast campuses. Irish & Celtic Studies research at Ulster is regarded as being at the forefront of Celtic Studies internationally, and the discipline has been at the heart of the University’s mission since its foundation. Ulster University has been involved with EUROCALL since its establishment.
