This project was from a competition brief set by D&AD. It was in collaboration with the social business Black Girl Gamers. BGG is a community of black and minority women connected together through their love of gaming. The brief outlined that BGG needed a new social identity to push their message and voice further, and to attract a wider audience. I designed a powerful and impactful social media presence, campaigns and an app that bring the community together in one place.
The colours that I used for this project followed the same scheme of BGGs current design, but with more saturated and colourful tones to covey the personality of the company. I wanted to make use of gradients to add a new exciting dimension to the look of the business, and make it feel modern and trendy. Pinks, blues and purples convey a powerful, fun and retro appeal, which fits the style of BGG.
When looking at different fonts that would be effective in the new social media identity and campaigns that I designed for BGG, I decided that it would be best to look at bold, sans serif typefaces. I felt that the thicker fonts were more suitable for the look of Black Girl Gamers as they are eye catching and convey a strength and importance.
I felt that designing an app for BGG would be beneficial for the community to compile all of their gaming videos, interviews, social media posts and event information. The app design related to the style of their social platform design and allowed the audience to interact with BGG and each other in a more meaningful way.
I greatly enjoyed this project as it was about something that I’m very passionate about, and conveys a message that is very important and relevant for this time.
