Visual communication through time has changed substantially to allow humans to communicate with each other on a greater and more accessible level, due to advancements in technology in the creative business. With the heavy influence that the internet and technology has had on society, it is easy to see why visual communication has had such a drastic change in the last 20 years.
Social media has had a large impact on not only humanity, but graphic design too. Reaching a designer’s audience is now easier than ever before, with creatives being able to promote themselves and network with clients. They can use platforms such as Instagram as an online portfolio, allowing them to showcase their work to millions of people publicly, increasing opportunities with consumers. These vast numbers of platforms offer a multitude of possibilities for companies to build visually appealing content such as advertisements, banners, memes and more.
In the last 5 to 10 years, there has been a number of movements that have taken place across the internet, backed by graphic designers and illustrators, helping to display facts and information to spread awareness about multiple political and social issues. The Black Lives Matter movement that began in 2013 made a large impact on the internet and society after the death of George Floyd in 2020. Social media is able to target a key target area, the younger generation who is more open to change. The outcry and demand for justice was supported by designers, as visual communication through the internet was the fastest and safest way to spread the word during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Due to the ever growing industry, social media will continue to evolve graphic design and the creative world as a whole. Having millions of designers work in your pocket will continue to promote and drive forward artists opportunities and creativity.
