Genndy Tartakovsky and Hotel Transylvania:

Genndy Tartakovsky is a Russian-American animator, director, producer, screenwriter, voice actor, storyboard artist, comic book writer and artist. He has created various animated television series on Cartoon Network and Adult Swim. He directed The first three Hotel Transylvania movies and also worked on well known animations such as power puff girls. He has a unique art style that looks amazing, in my opinion.

This is one of my favourite Character designs from Genndy Tartakovsky, I really love the art style consisting of strong curves and slightly sharp edges.  This character is from Hotel Transylvania. I like how the character has been shaped to seem more frightening while also being shown as a powerful/main character. You can see that the character is basically made out of Triangle shapes which gives the effect of him being evil/dangerous. Although he can also look friendly when posed different or with different facial expressions.

Hotel Transylvania is about a Hotel for monsters who can enjoy from time off from terrorising the world, This Hotel is ran by Dracula who is an overprotective Father over his daughter mavis. This is a great movie that I had sadly watched a lot of times as an adult… The Characters from this move are so weird but yet fun.

Below are more characters from the movie but appear to be slightly different as these all have rounded features which makes them appear to be more friendly characters rather than being intimidating like Dracula.

Other Work from Genndy Tartakovsky :

These images are two references of monsters and the alien one really draws my attention along with the style of the hands used in the top image. This is another example of Genndy Tartakovsky’s work, I love the style of the characters in the Power Puff Girls. In terms of shape you can see they are all rounded which makes them the friendly characters although out of the 3 Power puff girls the green one known as buttercup is has triangle/pointed shaped hair which could be linked to her being the angry/rebellious sister.

I love the exaggerated appearance given to the characters forms which is something I want to include in my character.

My Character ideas/designs:

I researched Genndy Tartakovsky art style images on google and here are some of the best ones I saw. I used these as reference when drawing sketches, I wanted to create some kind of female monster/villain with great power.

Here are some of my initial rough sketches:

None of these ideas really called any interest to me so I decided to redraw the fox girl and came up with this wolf girl which was something closer to what i wanted. i really love the large amount of hair paired with the slim figure. I feel like this would tie into Hotel Transylvania.

I decided to draw an alien in this specific style and I really liked this idea better and I feel like the alien suits the exaggerated slim look way better. She is a triangle shape highlighting that she’s evil and holds great power.

I added a long black dress and gloves to make her more elegant. I made her skin green as she’s an alien, added purple hair and matched her with a black dress as these colours are always associated with power and luxury. Most villains in animations/movies have a purple/black colour scheme.

Here are reference photos of famous Disney villains with the same colours:

I Decided to go with the alien design as it was my favourite out of them all and I think it goes well with the Hotel Transylvania theme.
