Colour schemes:

I took one of my thumbnails and added a Monochromatic Blue colour scheme with Blue tones as this is what our group decided to use for our animation backgrounds as it reminded us of Disney and gives a doom and gloomy kind of feeling that we wanted to achieve. For references we researched Disney’s 1940 Pinocchio movie.

Exercise 2 – Colour and Emotions:

We took this sample file and added colours to try and demonstrate a certain feeling/emotion.

Here I added Red tones to achieve a Furious/Angry/Fury emotion.

Here I added bright natural colours to achieve a cheerful emotion.

Research – Colour used in movies:

I researched different scenes from my favourite movies and colour patched the, to see what kinds of colours were used and what mood it conveys.

Wall.E – based on these colour patches you can see the creators were trying to achieve some warmth and a sense of happiness or comfort. these colours are very relaxing and easy on the eye. I highlighted the colours from the Christmas lights as these are very bright compared to the rest of the scene. I think this adding a little playful/ happy element to show that the character is content.

Spirted Away: Straight away you can notice how vibrant these colours are which indicates a sweet/joyful mood. Although these colours could also be associated with innocence, femineity, playfulness or beauty.

Maleficent – This colour scheme gives a sense of danger and darkness. These colours really help to convey that the character is evil or in power.

Spirited away – These colours create a calm but mysterious feeling. They could also be associated with fantasy/illusory/mystical.

Studying different scenes has really made me think of why certain colours have been used in scenes. It helps tell the story and gives the viewer a more personal feeling/emotion that keeps them interested.
