Week 1 – Form & Shape

Week 1 was the beginning of our module, where we dove into form and shape.

CLASS EXERCISE:

As our first exercise, we were given a quick warm up task, involving sketching out lines, circles and S shapes to warm up. We then combined shapes in order to create life-like characters using very primitive shapes, proving a useful warm-up before our homework task and a useful insight into the basics of form and shape.

HOMEWORK:

We were asked to pick three characters of our choice, study them and then outline their form and shape and how they’re structured. Although my three characters aren’t connected in any way, I thought they were a good choice, as each character’s form correlates with primitive shapes.

The first character is designed using very circular shapes for every part of her character, mainly in the eyes, head and body. The second is created with more rectangular shapes such as the neck and the body, whereas the third character is designed using a mic of round and rectangular shapes.

Overall this homework task was quite useful as it helped me start getting into the mindset of being able to breakdown their shape and observe their form.
