Why am I studying this module?
This module enables students to apply methods and techniques to extending and applying their knowledge and understanding of Communication. It incorporates all aspects of completing a research project, from topic selection through to writing up the project. This module builds upon the students’ understanding of research design and methods gained in Years 1 and 2.
What am I going to learn on this module?
This module provides students with knowledge and understanding of the process of undertaking a research project, and the skills required to carry out an independent piece of research. It allows students to further develop their conceptual, rational and creative thinking within the field of Communication. It further affords students the opportunity to focus on one specific aspect of communication research and pursue a topic in which they have a particular interest.

Learning outcomes in Coursework 1
- Source and critically evaluate current literature in the chosen research area
- Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts, arguments and assumptions relevant to the chosen research area
- Provide a clear rationale for the appropriateness and viability of the topic or area of enquiry, based on the review of the literature
- Present a rationale for the selected method of enquiry
Learning outcomes in Coursework 2
- Demonstrate skills of data collection
- Select appropriate data analysis procedures and apply these procedures to primary data
- Interpret the analysis, with reference to the literature previously evaluated
- Show how a contribution to knowledge has been made, and what restrictions might exist within that contribution
- Present a written report of the project, complying with the guidelines provided in respect of structure, academic writing, referencing and hand in date
