For the final task of the assignment, we were tasked with creating a helmet from scratch. For this task, I decided to model Solaire of Astora’s helmet from Dark Souls. I always loved this helmet and I thought it would be fun to model. I created the helmet by starting off with a simplistic cylinder shape, then extruding and building atop of it. I had fun with creating the outside rim as well as the metal notches that line the front and back of the helmet. I did struggle with creating the rim going around the outside of the eyeholes. I created the feather for the helmet by using the knife cut tool on a plane before adding a solidify modifier to it to bulk it out.
I then imported the .fbx model into Substance Painter and proceeded to texture it. I used modified metal textures with extra roughness and I added a slight grime smart mask on top of the mask as well as small blood splatters to give the feeling of the helmet being used in war. Then, I imported the textures back into Blender to apply onto the model with nodes so I could create some final renders. I added a soft glowing light underneath the mask to give it a delicate and mysterious appearance.
