With a new topic at hand, we contemplated the concepts of hue, value and saturation and their complex meanings. In an analysis of the colour wheel we practiced colouring.

When choosing to depict the emotion of hope, I imagined a vast sky and open waters.  Using a vibrant blue-green hue I coloured the sky lightening towards the horizon. As I had chosen to experiment with a complimentary colour, I chose a vibrant pink-ish/red across the previous colour in the wheel. However, this choice of colours clashed instead of complement.

For fury, I was interested in focusing on the waters using a limited scheme. With a monochromatic red palette, mixing the saturation of the tones, I tried to show a subtle image of fury, being emphasized by the surrounding darkness.

Adapting to the new idea

By the end of the class, as I was moved to group 3, we started taking notes on the world building. Some points like their origins and society structure had to be developed to make it clearer. We took as much information as we could from the past members’ work on Discord and created a mood board to collect ideas throughout the weeks.

The tutor noted that the work so far seemed to focus on character design, and we should produce more for the environment first.

We started building onto the colour schemes based on each witches’ powers and aesthetics, architecture of their territories being one of the components to it. For both Maiden and Mother, we chose an analogous colour scheme, with Crone being monochromatic instead.

With the colours in mind I made a map to visualize it.

I thought this palette out by discussing possible hues for each of the witches and habitats. With Crone’s medicinal powers and depiction of plague doctor as she handles illnesses, I chose to follow the meaning of the vivid yellows in a monochromatic darker palette. Later connecting it to the colours on sepia pictures. The cooler green tones were selected for mother’s connection to nature and maturity to depict the colours found in a swamp. For maiden however, we thought saturated and flamboyant reds would evoke her sensual personality and her territory’s focus on entertainment and glamour. For her powers of spirituality I thought she could use an analogue palette instead of monochromatic instead, to also imply her spirituality and separation from a human image.

For the next step, I found a few pieces of furniture to swatch the hues from, only selecting a few areas from them. Since they were mostly muted values, they fit more natural and earthy colours. The complimentary looks more like the colours of a night sky with artificial lighting. These reminded me of a few colours used by Van Gogh on his painting Cafe terrace at night. Therefore, I took the detailed drawings I had finished last week and reworked them to fit the new group. I changed the buildings to a mixture of rural and industrial looking buildings for the culturally diverse areas, maintaining the aspect of having a sculpture in the center. I finished the line art by simply filling it out with colours to see how they worked. I do hope to work it in more detail by adding tones in but the colours worked well for this environment.
