Task 1

  • Concept artist – a concept artist comes up with the initial designs and appearance for the project.
  • Storyboard artist – a storyboard artist turns the script into a visual representation of the story.
  • Character designer – a character designer designs characters based on the initial sketches of the concept artist, personality and physical traits that are given to them by the director of the project.
  • 2D animator – a 2D animator creates motion by drawing still images that are put into a sequence that create the look of movement.
  • 3D modeler – a 3D modeler makes digital models of environments, props and characters.

Out of all the jobs I listed above I am most interested in character design and 2D animation, both are well suited to me, and I enjoy the process of creating a character and animating.

Task 2

I mainly looked at jobs in Northern Ireland as I am not willing to move home yet, I would rather get some experience here then move once I am more confident.

I think this job would be a good fit as I meet most of the requirements and it is an entry level job.

This job is for a 3D character artist; however, it requires past experiences that I don’t have. It has also been temporarily removed.

This job would be great however I would need experience to do it.

This job is entry level and in Ireland however in their requirements section they say they want someone with experience.

Overall, the best job out of the ones I have listed would have to be the freelance storyboard artist as it does not require experience and I enjoy creating storyboards. It is also in Dublin and would help me gain some experience in the 2D animation industry.

Task 3

I decided to look at Rebecca Sugar as she is both a storyboard artist and a character designer, she attended the School of Visual Arts in New York. She first joined the crew of ‘Adventure Time’ as a storyboard revisionist during the show’s first season, she then was promoted to a storyboard artist, making her debut during the production of the second season of the show. She then started production on her own show ‘Steven Universe’ and was an executive producer and a storyboard artist for several of its episodes. After looking into her work and how she started, I realise that I need experience in the field I want to go into then once I have a large portfolio of work and a lot of experience under my belt, I may be able to produce my own work.

Here is some of Rebecca Sugar’s sketchbook work for ‘Steven Universe’
